Note to the HVAC commission employees
Whats the note to the HVAC tech that works for 33.5% commission of service ticket...?
If you're working for commission, maybe its time to go and get a real job.
I love customers, they help pay my bills and I provide a service. Its a nice relationship. That is the same attitude all HVAC related service used to have years ago
What I've seen for so many years is how the HVAC business corps and LLC's love to hire a gaggle of techs that really correlate to sales people, why tho? Because they ARE commission HVAC sales techs and in some cases, not even techs, just scammers and hackers.
Here is one I come across today.....
- Customer has issues with their Nest thermostat.
- NEST thermostat worked, fine yesterday.
- HVAC company came out the day it worked.
- HVAC company installed TWO UV air cleaners.
- HVAC company wired in said air cleaners to HVAC control circuit.
- NEST stopped working.
- Blamed bad wires, bad circuit boards, bad NEST....
Guess what the HVAC company whom installed the UV cleaners didn't do?
They didn't Disconnect and or blame the Air cleaner........
$3,000 for two air cleaners..... and "Service"........
Customer didn't need two UV air cleaners. That's another story as to why...
As soon as those UV air cleaners were disconnected, miraculously the NEST worked great...
Again... The NEST then worked GREAT.
You would think the HVAC company that was out could have thought it was the Air cleaners, wired into the low voltage control circuit causing the issue.... Nope, tech would have lost his COMMISSION!!!
Its a plague, HVAC up selling is a big problem.
-Homeowners, I always say.. Get second opinion and ask the tech if he works for a monetary commission.
-Techs, quit ripping customers OFF.
-Techs, not smart to wire up multiple low voltage ADD-ons for benefit of your WALLET.
You should know better, it causes issues.

Nest hello installation
This is the easiest installation ever.
The nest app, walks you through the entire process.
But, there are a few factors that we want you to know......
Compatibility:
The nest hello is compatible with....
-One door chime, one door bell.
-Exceptions to the rules, two nest doorbells ONE chime.
-16-24 volt transformers needed. You install, get a yellow light, you'll need a new transformer.
-Nicor chimes, Nest doorbells do not work with all in one door bell chimes. Sure they sound great but they wont work. its an all in one transformer and chime recessed in the wall, wont work, need to convert to a new chime. See pic, you have this, it will need to be converted.
-No doorbell wires, no wall chime? You'll need a chime system and transformer installed or a 24 volt power source to the doorbell, can then use google home or hub for alerts as well as phones and tablets.
Last but not least.

- Make sure to swipe on show password while entering network info.
- Make sure not to select electronic door chime unless you actually have a melodic digital chime.
Nest Thermostat installation
Thermostat installation guide:
As best we can explain for the non technical
As best we can explain for the non technical
- Checking compatibility:
- Remove current thermostat face. Normally these pull up and out or downward and out.
Sometimes there are hidden jumpers and details on there that aid in knowing how your current thermostat and system are set up.
- Whats compatible? These combos are not compatible, though not always is that the case. These combos would usually require Pro Installation at all costs.
- -R,G,B terminals.
- -R,G,D
- -R,C,D
- -R,B,D
- -R,C,1,2
- -R,C,-,+
Totally nest compatible thermostat wiring: Any combination of wires, minimum of 4 wires.
- R, RC, Y, Y1, Y2, W, W1, W2, G, C, B, O.
- C terminals are dangerous, B terminals on Trane systems and older thermostats are also many times a C terminal in disguise. We will discuss the C terminal later in more detail.
- RC/R or RC/RH is your power wire.
- Y or Y1 are your cooling Compressor wire.
- G is your fan/Blower manual control wire.
- O/B are your heat pump wires ( you should only be utilizing one or the other.
- C is your common wire, this terminal/wire is a 24 volt power return/loop shall we say.
Lets install a nest thermostat, the right way:
-Once you know your system will be compatible with a Nest thermostat, you can proceed to these steps. Make sure you took pictures of the wiring, the back of the old thermostat and have some idea of what type of ac and heating system you have.
- -SHUT OFF the circuit breakers and turn off any local switches near accessible ac equipment.
-Split systems normally have two sets of breakers, the AC outside and the blower inside.
-Rooftops have one breaker.
-Condo and apartment units sometimes only have one.
- -Remove the old thermostat.
- -Mount the Nest sub-base, Use the longer screws, not the metal plate with the tiny screws, that plate is for special installations such as thermostats that are recessed in the wall(wall box).
- -Make sure there is free movement in your thermostat wire. Many customers screw the mounting hardware right into the thermostat wire.
- -Clean up and re-strip your thermostat wires, so they aren't all old, crusty and bent.
- -Make sure there is about a 1/4 inch or so of copper exposed. The wire needs to fit into the slot.
- -Push in the corresponding terminal, slip that terminals wire into it and release.
- -Once all done, make sure corresponding wires are in and the terminal tab is recessed.
If you are replacing a Honeywell and see a wire in W.
The W is a triple purpose terminal in most cases, it can be used for gas heating, electric heating or a heat pump O and heat pump. Which do you have?
If you have a gas furnace you use W1 or W(Nest E)
If you have a heat pump you need to know what brand you have. By default the Nest uses a heat pump setting of O. In other cases B is used with Hvac units such as Ruud, Rheem and come select others. You'll have to access the secret menu in the Honeywell thermostat. Look up the model of your thermostat on google and search for manual. Look for installer set up and it will explain how to get this O/B/W setting info.
- Put the Nest Face on.
- Turn on the breakers.
- The nest should show a little house on the screen and boot up.
Lets get started with the Settings in the NEST:
- -Choose language
- -Connect your network.
- -Confirm your equipment settings.
- -Choose homeowner
- -Choose heat pump setting for heat pump installation .
- -Select O or B depending upon your type of HVAC.
- -If you have a dual fuel system there will be some other choice that arise.
- -Duel fuel means you have a heat pump with gas/oil heating. More common in colder winter states.
- -Like mentioned before, some idiot installers may have ended up putting a wire in both heating type terminals. You may also see both used if you have a really old thermostat or if someone didn't know how to set your original thermostat up properly. These are very common installation problems.
- -Eco mode, Only use this if you don't mind waiting for your house to cool or heat until you arrive home. Set eco mode for something practical, if you like 78 degrees cooling, don't let your house get hotter than 82 while you're gone. My suggestion is always comfort over savings. So, let the auto schedule feature do the work for you and leave the eco modes off.
- -Test, you can skip the test if you want and move on.
- -Sync to Nest APP.
- -Get entry key.
- -Open up the app, sign up if you already have not.
- -Hit the plus sign after signing up and confirming email.
- -Click continue without scanning.
- -Choose your product.
- -Click already installed.
- -Enter key (It auto caps)
- -Done!!!
Common WIRES: If your original thermostat has a ACTIVE C terminal. You're done.
If you have a situation where you DO NOT HAVE a C terminal active. From a professional standpoint, I'd suggest you get a NEST pro out to activate one. The NEST is the best thermostat and if having a C terminal just keeps things smooth.

Nest thermostat installation with Innovative Air
Innovative Air has installed more nest thermostats with 2 Nest Pro techs than any company in this state with all their employees combined. That is one big claim but, I saw the numbers of over 400 thermostats alone in 2017.
My name is Ralph, I own innovative air and fell in love with the nest thermostat long ago. Innovative air has been blessed to know this product so well. I could sit here and write a HOW to Install a Nest thermostat blog post or I can explain to you why you should REALLY have a professional install your nest thermostat. And to be honest, NOT any professional.
Look simple? Its not. There are tons of different combinations of air conditioning and heating wiring installation and applications. There are many different colored wires too. Lets break down the basics all the way up to the most complicated of nest thermostat installations.
I'll start by saying this, 85% of the consumers who try and self install a thermostat FAIL!!! You'll spend hours pulling your hair out, hours on the phone and searching google for how to install a nest thermostat. Why waste time? Better yet, why RISK blowing up your control circuits. Improper Nest thermostat installations have cost some of my customers an arm and a leg. Blown fuses, blown transformers, blown circuit boards. I can keep on going.
Don't get discouraged, the NEST thermostat is worth the trouble and worth the anxiety!!
NEST thermostats and conventional AC and heating. The easiest wiring installation.
Now, add in the nest installations that actually have an active C wire, common wire. Usually ends up with a blown control fuse, blown circuit board and or blown transformer. Most customers with this have success with their Nest installation but, not always.
Throw in 2 stage cooling and heating applications and it gets deeper. Nest installations are not always plug and go. There in fact could be and is at times software changes and terminal option set ups that need to take place. A customer is bound to not have specific cooling and heating options engaged for maximum benefit. There are also applications that have humidifiers and fresh air intake systems. It can get complicated and you could ruin something.
Heat pump and nest thermostat installations, they are pretty popular in warmer climates.
Proprietary HVAC equipment control, aka controllers/communicating and zone systems.
One thing about controller based systems is this, if you think you have conventional wiring and you connect a nest thermostat to your equipment, something will break or it wont work. Why risk it? But, don't be discouraged. Many manufacturers have been kind enough to place conventional ( Legacy wiring) on their high seer hvac equipment.
Zone systems have become more and more popular in today's HVAC industry. Two thermostats, one controller and one HVAC system. The nest is compatible with these applications most of the time. The problem sometimes is that what you see at the thermostat is not what you see at the controller and things may need to be modified.
Point of all this discussion is simple, I want customers to enjoy nest thermostats and save money with the nest thermostat. Hire a Nest pro to install your Nest thermostat in Arizona and no matter where you live. Be careful of the contractor you choose. Many nest pro installers and HVAC professionals work for companies that are commission based wanting more money or want to kiss their bosses ass and or justify their jobs by raising a service ticket cost.
Questions you MUST ask before you hire someone to install your nest thermostat:
A good nest thermostat install tech will confirm your system is compatible by inspecting your actual hvac equipment. If they don't bust out the ladder or pop off some covers, they're just lazy.
A real professional nest thermostat installer will add your common wire for free, don't fall for the extra charge crap. The only exception they should be letting you know about additional costs is if you just do not have enough wires in the wall.
One other application you should not get charged extra for during a nest thermostat installation is the re-wire for an application that has a proprietary thermostat (NOT SYSTEM) Some pre installed thermostats out there run on 1,2,3 wiring code. But, up at your hvac control is legacy (Conventional) wires smiling and waiting for you to put them to use with a nest thermostat. It's an extra 10 minutes to complete, big deal.
And worse case scenario, if a nest pro installation cannot be completed due to incompatibility, first they should not be charging you for the compatibility check and lastly if they spend time on your system and cant make the nest work, a small fee for their time is valid. Small fee for the 20-30 they spend checking things over.
But, if they are leaving your house without giving you a reasonable, cost effective solution to why you wanted a NEST in the first place then you may need to give the boss of that company a call.
I love NEST thermostats, if one cannot be installed due to any reason, I then have to move on to a solution that is practical. IE, another thermostat brand. That, doesn't happen often.
Don't get screwed over by HVAC contractors and their cheap tactics to get your money.
Innovative air is the best NEST installation choice in Arizona. It's how I make my living! You can count on the advise set forth!

C wire and nest thermostats
What is a c wire and why does a NEST thermostat end up needing one?
"Official definition"
The common wire alleviates a lot of head aches for the NEST thermostat and the customer.
Installing the common wire is something WE DO and DO NOT charge extra for. Innovative air has been a nest pro for many, many years and wont neglect the benefit of installing a common wire, aka C wire during a nest thermostat installation.
It's like giving a car 87 octane and then giving it 91.... The nest will act like the happy little thermostat that it is... In Arizona, you do not want to have issues with your AC not working because of your wonderful nest thermostat. Get nest thermostats installed professionally by innovative air, you wont regret it. WE don't charge extra to install a c wire on a nest thermostat but, we know a ton of HVAC companies in arizona that do.
Veteran air conditioning techs who have installed many Honeywell thermostats over the years know what good a common wire does to a higher technology stat. That is why they are added. Real HVAC pros and installers add C wires to any thermostat that runs on batteries. When the battery dies, you still have power to that awesome thermostat. Electrical stability is prime for any high tech thermostat and that is just what a Common, C wire does for your Nest thermostat.
"Official definition"
What is the C wire used for on a thermostat?
The C wire, or “common wire” enables the continuous flow of 24 VAC power to the thermostat. ... If your system doesn't have a C-wire, you'll need to run a new cable from your furnace to your thermostat to install most of the modern smart thermostat models. Thermostat wire is just a big spool of bundled, color-coded wires.
Majority of thermostats in homes these days do not have common wires, aka C wire. Nest thermostats claim they do not need a C wire. The nest claim is true and that is magical but, that is not always the case.
Installing the common wire is something WE DO and DO NOT charge extra for. Innovative air has been a nest pro for many, many years and wont neglect the benefit of installing a common wire, aka C wire during a nest thermostat installation.

Nest products and your home
Over the last many years, I've been installing and promoting Nest Labs products to all of my air conditioning customers, friends and family as well as random strangers in stores. I always knew there was a reason why the product interested me so much to the point that I was basically selling this product like one would tout a new Iphone but, these days more so I know with hardcore evidence that the Nest product is the best in the industry. NEST is a must have name for every single home and business out there and NEST is still pioneering to make my statement a reality to everyone who reads this.
Let me give you a little history, I'm an HVAC professional for over 30 years. If there is one product out there I had to recommend to everyone who owns a home or a business, rents an apartment or a home or to professionals who manage a facility, office or a business, the NEST thermostat would be THE product that everyone should be in command of.
Take it from me, I want to provide and promote products with reputation, reliability and ABILITY!!
The NEST thermostat gets a bad rap out there on the internet by some consumers, gets trash talked by many HVAC professionals and pitted against so many other products that are truly inferior to the NEST thermostat.
((Nest WiFi Thermostat))
Now, let me just give you the one MAIN reason this is the best addition to any facility and HVAC system. All homes, offices and business's have Air conditioning and cooling systems, your objective is to spend as least money as possible with the costs involved in using an HVAC system. The NEST thermostat is the ticket to ride in saving money.
First off, the NEST thermostat will PAY for itself super fast. Take the cost of the stat, deduct about $8-$15 a month( On average ) Apply any rebates that your electric company gives you for upgrading to a NEST and you essentially have a product that pays for or almost pays for itself in one YEAR. If it doesn't pay for itself in one year, it sure will in the next 6 months.
Second, you can control your HVAC from anywhere!!! From your phone, tablet, or computer.
This is great for people who constantly forget to adjust their HVAC set points or who like to change temp frequently. It makes things convenient, I could give you 10 more instances a remote controlled thermostat will be beneficial to you but, you can imagine how it will make your life easier.
The technology and the support, the research and quality within this thermostat is simple amazing. It is the absolute best and there isn't one company out there who can really compete with a NEST.
Why do NEST thermostats get a bad name in some cases?
There are a handful of excuses as to why a NEST is NOT a good product or not better than the competition. (There is no competition and NEST IS NEVER NOT A GOOD product)
-Improper installation.
Homeowners are not expected to know how to install a thermostat. I can understand this, there are so many different types of HVAC system configurations that its really tough to swap a thermostat if you don't know what your dealing with. Sometimes a swap is cut and dry and most the time it is not so cut and dry. I deal with 20 thermostats a week that are improperly installed. This will give any product a bad name. Nest support try's their best to help out consumers attempting a self install and in most cases succeed in assisting. An improper install will make anyone want to rip their hair out.
-Inexperienced Install professionals
I deal with an additional 10-15 thermostats a week improperly installed by Professionals. Not all HVAC techs are created equally. Most of the time, they are just unfamiliar with the product. Other times, they are just not real HVAC techs. It's best to have a NEST pro install one of these thermostats.
-OLD timers/ OLD School HVAC'rs.
No offense to them, they are just stuck in the stone age and rarely ever recommend cutting edge technology by any means. and other times they are just not up with the times. I will admit, the HVAC industry changes yearly and the technology with it does too, its hard for some to keep up and or they just don't encounter new tech as often as some.
-System issues, compatibility conflicts and equipment conflict.
Sometimes a nest thermostat will act erratically, causing alarm to the installer, the consumer who has just installed the NEST and to the user whos NEST thermostat has been working "Just fine". 99% of the time most issues that arise can be taken care of by a nest pro or by a NEST PRO who is also an HVAC professional.
Sometimes, systems are controller based systems and the NEST will not work. Tough to tell unless your an HVAC professional. Some scenarios seem controller based and you'll think the NEST thermostat will not be compatible but, secretly hiding inside your HVAC equipment are adjustments that can be made by a simple RE-Wire of the thermostat wires that allows a NEST thermostat to become a perfect fit.
And now for the least obvious, your HVAC system has problems. VERY OFTEN, customers install a NEST thermostat or have one pro installed and they discover their HVAC system has had issues all along. The older thermostats are not smart, The NEST thermostat is and the NEST thermostat will give errors codes and actually do something smart like stop your HVAC from running due to issues you were unaware of. Naturally, the consumer and HVAC professionals will often blame the NEST.
Here is a fast example of how a nest is not the problem....
John the awesome Consumer buys a nest, installs it, it starts heating his house in the dead of winter then all the sudden STOPS after 3 minutes of blowing out some heat. Whats really happening here is that the heating system is overheating and shutting off until it cools down or is locking out on the control due to overheating. The nest try's again after a delayed mode notification and the same result occurs. Almost everyone will blame their new Nest thermostat but, the real culprit is the HVAC system.
See, your old crummy thermostat wasn't smart enough to do what a NEST does.
Errors would occur on your system, the system would just keep resetting itself, it goes unnoticed to you because the old thermostat wouldn't give you a notification of a problem. So you never noticed the issue thus thinking your system always worked fine. I have had many customers say this and the truth of the matter was a faulty system due to lack of airflow, dirty filters, dirty coils and dirty condensers and in some cases bad blowers and low refrigerant charges due to leaks.
In wrapping up....
My point with all of this is simple, the NEST is smart and worth the money. It self learns a program for you, you don't have to fiddle around setting up days and times, the nest stat does it for you. You can set up a schedule on your own with the NEST and its 1000 times easier than any of the older stats out there. The technology and software inside the Nest thermostat is constantly updating. The nest thermostat works with just about any other smart hub or device out there "" Alexa, set AC to 75" How cool is that?
I am an HVAC professional and A NEST PRO ELITE. I install these thermostats and support them for a reason, its my business but more importantly it is the absolute coolest product out there, it saves you MONEY and really makes things easier for you. The NEST SAVES energy, saves you money, saves the environment (if that is something you want to do)
Why pay an HVAC professional $300-$450 for a thermostat that makes no sense? Get a NEST instead. The NEST thermostat is the only product that will put YOU in touch with your HVAC system. You'll be more aware of when your AC or heating is NOT working. This product is a flagship, get one installed and put yourself in a position that makes you aware. Don't get up-sold by slimy HVAC professionals trying to build a higher service ticket. The NEST thermostat is way smarter than you think or appears.
A lot of HVAC pros out there Don't like the NEST because you as a consumer have the ability to buy a product that HVAC pros wont stock on a truck due to its cost and inability to mark up costs on by 300%. Innovative Air is a NEST pro elite and a no games HVAC company.
Stay tuned... I will be entering some more info to come on all of NEST products and how they are revolutionary and will make your life more easier, save you money, give you piece of mind and make your home fun and smart.
